Minimally-Invasive Joint Replacement

Minimally-invasive joint replacement surgery uses small incisions and specially-designed instruments to perform both simple and complex surgeries without the need for large incisions. Smaller incisions enable the surgeon to preserve healthy tissue so patients enjoy fewer complications and a speedier and more comfortable recovery. Dr. Karkare has substantial experience and skill in minimally-invasive surgical procedures for joint replacement, using innovative approaches and state-of-the-art technology for precise placement of implant components through smaller, tissue-sparing incisions. As with other surgical techniques and approaches, the decision to use a minimally-invasive surgical approach is made on a patient-by-patient basis to help ensure each patient achieves the best possible long-term outcomes.

Robotic Hip Replacement
Robotic joint replacement may sound like something out of a science fiction novel, but thanks to recent advances in technology, robotic assistance has become a very effective surgical approach used to improve surgical accuracy and provide patients with faster recoveries and better long-term outcomes. In robot-assisted joint surgery, computer technology is used to help the surgeon gain better control over very precise aspects of the joint replacement process, supporting more precise implant placement and ideal alignment of the artificial joint components. At his practices, Dr. Karkare relies on the state-of-the-art MAKOplasty® robotic-assisted system for better implant placement and reproducible results based on each patient’s unique anatomy. Robotic-assisted hip replacement surgeries are performed using an anterior surgical approach, a tissue-sparing method that results in less tissue trauma as well as a faster and more comfortable recovery period.
Anterior Hip Replacement
Traditional hip replacement uses large incisions through major muscle groups in the posterior area of the hip to gain access to the damaged hip joint, resulting in greater tissue damage and a longer and less comfortable recovery period. In anterior hip replacement, incisions are made along the front (or anterior) portion of the hip. These incisions can be precisely located to avoid extensive tissue damage by moving muscles aside instead of cutting through them. Patients who are good candidates for an anterior approach to hip replacement surgery can benefit from faster healing and recovery, less post-surgical discomfort, and a faster return to normal activities and optimal joint function compared to men and women who undergo traditional hip replacement procedures.
Computer-Assisted Joint Replacement
Computer-assisted surgical techniques were developed to enable surgeons to achieve high levels of precision in a wide array of surgical procedures, including joint replacement surgeries where precision is the key to long-term success and normal, comfortable joint function and performance. Computers provide surgeons with continual feedback including two-dimensional and three-dimensional real-time imaging during the surgical procedure to help guide implant component placement based on the patient’s unique anatomy and other factors. Dr. Karkare has extensive experience in computer-assisted joint replacement techniques, using the most advanced surgical systems and methods to achieve precise and accurate placement of artificial joint components for optimal joint function.
Total Knee Replacement
Knee replacement surgery has been in high demand in recent years as “baby boomers” enter their senior years while continuing to lead more active lives. Knee joint replacement is most commonly performed in men and women who have had joint damage related to arthritis, but it may also be performed following significant injury to the knee joint. Dr. Karkare offers custom knee replacement surgeries based on a wealth of diagnostic data to facilitate greater accuracy during surgery and better results afterward. Custom knee replacement surgery offers patients many benefits, including a better and more stable fit, faster recovery following surgery, less pain during recovery and decreased risks of complications like infection. Custom knee replacement surgery also involves less tissue damage so patients can return to their normal activities faster. Total knee replacement is most common, removing and replacing damaged bone on both the femur and tibia (upper and lower leg bones) for restoration of pain-free range of motion. Partial knee replacement may be considered in patients with less extensive joint damage.
Joint Replacement Surgeries

Joint replacement surgery can provide men and women with greater mobility and significantly improved quality of life, but it’s a decision that requires careful consideration and guidance from a skilled and experienced joint replacement specialist. Before undergoing joint replacement surgery, every patient undergoes a comprehensive and complete diagnostic evaluation to rule out more conservative, nonsurgical approaches to care. Surgery is considered when more conservative treatment options have been determined to be ineffective or inappropriate for achieving relief of pain and other symptoms. As a top-ranked orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Karkare is skilled in both traditional “open” surgical techniques and minimally-invasive approaches.

Revision Knee Replacement
Revision knee replacement is what we call an operation to revise your existing knee replacement. The surgery can be either a minor adjustment, or a massive operation, replacing a large amount of your bone. A typical knee replacement will use plastic to replace the ends of the thigh bone (femur) and shin bone (tibia), inserting the plastic between them and the knee cap (patella)
Avascular Necrosis
Also called Osteonecrosis or Aseptic Necrosis, Avascular necrosis is a serious condition that occurs when bone tissue begins to weaken and die off as a result of inadequate blood flow to the tissue. Although many people have never heard of avascular necrosis,   it’s one of the most common causes age-related knee pain. Avascular necrosis can occur anywhere, but it most commonly affects the hips and knees, followed by the ankles, shoulders and upper arms. The underlying cause of avascular necrosis is not clearly understood, and in-depth imaging studies combined with professional experience and expertise play critical roles in diagnosing the condition. Ultimately, the goal of treatment is to stop the progression of the disease and to restore normal, pain-free use of the joint or limb. While nonsurgical intervention may provide temporary relief of symptoms, most patients will require surgery to restore damaged areas and relieve pain.
Hip Bursitis
Hip bursitis occurs when small, fluid-filled sacs called bursa become inflamed, sometimes as a result of an injury, surgery, repetitive motion sports like running, spinal disease, rheumatoid arthritis or anatomical abnormalities in the leg or joint. Hip bursitis is often treated nonsurgically, using medication and rest to help reduce inflammation and relieve pain.   More advanced or “stubborn” cases of hip bursitis may require surgery to remove the inflamed bursa without limiting the normal motion of the joint. Dr. Karkare evaluates each patient individually to ensure the most appropriate care is provided, including both nonsurgical and surgical options.
Hip Dysplasia
Hip dysplasia is a painful condition that most commonly develops in young children and teens while the hip joint and surrounding tissues are growing and developing. While a normal hip grows to develop a snug fit between the ball portion of the joint and its cup-shaped socket, in hip dysplasia the joint is malformed, resulting in a less secure junction between the ball and cup that enables the hip to slip out of alignment or to become dislocated. Hip dysplasia may be treated conservatively in some younger patients, but in other cases including patients who have had multiple unsuccessful corrections, hip replacement surgery may be the best option for long-term relief of symptoms and normal functioning of the joint.
