About Holbrook, NY

Holbrook is a designated census area (CDP) and hamlet situated in Suffolk County, New York, within the United States. As of the 2010 census, the population of this area was recorded at 27,195 residents. Holbrook is positioned adjacent to the eastern perimeter of Long Island MacArthur Airport.

The land we now recognize as Holbrook was initially a part of a Royal patent secured by William Nicoll, a wealthy politician from New York City, in 1697. This legal documentation was essential to validate his acquisition of this land from the Secatogue Indians. However, for nearly one hundred and fifty years, there was very little settlement in this area.

In 1848, Alexander McCotter purchased approximately 5000 acres of land and made small tracts available for sale. The first school was constructed in 1860, and three years later, the first church was established. Around 1900, this building was transformed into St. John’s Lutheran Church and still stands today, located just south of the Long Island Railroad crossing on the eastern side of Coates Avenue.

There are a couple of unverified accounts regarding the origin of Holbrook’s name, both of which revolve around a stream or brook. One version suggests that the community was initially known as “Old Brook,” while another suggests it started as “Hollow Brook.”

Although the streams and brooks in question have long vanished, there is some geographic evidence suggesting the possible existence of a brook running from the northeastern part of the community to the southwest. However, the topography has been significantly altered due to extensive development, resulting in the disappearance of any visible remnants of these waterways.

In 1927, the Holbrook Volunteer Fire Department was established, and in 1929, the first firehouse in Holbrook was constructed on Broadway Avenue. It was a wooden structure with two sets of swinging double doors and a bell tower on the left front corner. The first siren was added to the tower around 1934.

As the fire department grew in terms of members and equipment, a new single-story firehouse was built on the south side of Terry Boulevard in 1956. Two sub-stations were introduced to the District in 1973, and the current main firehouse was erected in 1989.

Holbrook’s significant population expansion commenced in 1969 when a new section of the Long Island Expressway, connecting Veterans Memorial Highway in Islandia (formerly Central Islip) to Patchogue Road in Holbrook, was opened. Model homes began to emerge along both sides of the expressway service roads.

This population growth brought an increase in vehicles for the oil-coated sand and gravel roads. To accommodate this growth, street lights, curbs, and sidewalks were added to the new roads, which transitioned from blue stone to asphalt.

The Long Island Railroad tracks serve as the boundary between the Town of Islip on the south side and the Town of Brookhaven on the north.

Holbrook’s original railroad station once stood just west of the Coates Avenue crossing. A bit further west, near the Ronkonkoma Station, stood a wooden water tower used to service the steam engines that operated trains for commuters, summer residents, and mail transportation.

Before the convenience of the Long Island Expressway, the journey to Manhattan in the 1950s could take up to three hours. It seems that some things, like commuting times, have remained unchanged over the years!
