About Ronkonkoma, NY

Ronkonkoma is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) located primarily within the Town of Islip, with a smaller eastern portion situated in the Town of Brookhaven in Suffolk County, on Long Island, New York, United States. According to the 2020 census, it had a population of 19,082.

The Ronkonkoma post office utilizes ZIP Code 11779 and provides postal services to portions of various neighboring hamlets and CDPs that surround Ronkonkoma.

Ronkonkoma, New York, gained prominence due to the famous Lake Ronkonkoma, although its history extends far beyond the lake’s fame. The initial inhabitants of the area were Native Americans who considered the lake’s waters sacred. Among the thirteen Indian tribes in the vicinity, four (Setaukets, Unkechaugs, Secatogs, and Nissequoges) resided along the lake’s shores.

While the exact timeline of their settlement remains uncertain, archaeological evidence, such as stone weapons and arrowheads near the lake, attests to their presence. Much of the city’s legendary lore stems from the activities of these four tribes, and the name Ronkonkoma is believed to have Algonquin origins, signifying a “boundary fishing place.”

The earliest settlers in Ronkonkoma were primarily of English descent, many of whom came from Massachusetts in the 1600s. The city’s growth started gradually, as the settlers appreciated the safety Long Island offered and had access to boats for quick escapes if needed. A 1795 survey indicated just five houses on the northern side of the lake and none to the south. By the 1830s, there were only a few dozen more houses.

Significant changes occurred when the Native Americans decided to sell their land to the European settlers. The Setauket tribe was the first to do so, with the price consisting of various items, including hoes, muskets, lead, coats, needles, and more. They retained certain rights to fish, hunt, and live on the land under specific circumstances. Unfortunately, many Native Americans had succumbed to foreign diseases like smallpox by the time the white settlers took over.

Land was divided among settlers based on their contributions to the purchase price, but a lack of legal documents meant that all transactions needed to be patented in England. Disputes over land arose due to discrepancies between the agreed-upon rules and their implementation. One prominent settler was the Richard Smith Family, which later became Smithtown.

In the early 1900s, Ronkonkoma gained recognition as a resort town, with hotels like the Lake Front Hotel catering to visitors. Local residents preferred to live farther from the lake, where the land was better suited for farming. Over time, Ronkonkoma evolved into a prestigious destination for affluent individuals who owned summer residences in the area.

Demographics

According to the 2020 United States Census, there were 19082 individuals and 6,150 households in the CDP (Census-Designated Place).

The demographic composition of the CDP included 77.7% White, 4.5% African American, 7.7% Asian, 5.1% from other racial backgrounds, and 5.0% of mixed racial heritage. Additionally, 20.9% of the population identified as Hispanic or Latino.

The population within the CDP exhibited a diverse age distribution, with 20.1% of residents under 18 years old, 6.1% under the age of five, and 13.6% who were 65 years or older.

In terms of economic status, the median household income in the CDP was $114,216, while the per capita income averaged $41,792. The poverty rate in the area was approximately 3.5%.
