About Farmingdale, NY

Farmingdale is a legally recognized village located on Long Island, situated within the Town of Oyster Bay in Nassau County, New York, United States. As of the 2020 Census, the village had a population of 8,466 residents.

The Lenox Hills neighborhood is positioned adjacent to Bethpage State Park, and the remainder of the village is conveniently accessible within a fifteen-minute drive from the park.

Farmingdale is also approximately 37 miles (about 59 kilometers) southeast of Midtown Manhattan and can be easily accessed via the Ronkonkoma Branch of the Long Island Rail Road. For those traveling from the city and the mainland, the Long Island Expressway and Seaford Oyster Bay Expressway are the most convenient routes to reach Farmingdale.

The initial European settler to arrive in the region was Thomas Powell, who came in 1687. On October 18, 1695, he acquired a 15-square-mile (39 km2) piece of land from three Native American tribes in what is now known as the Bethpage Purchase.

This purchase encompassed present-day Farmingdale as well as Bethpage, Melville, North Massapequa, Old Bethpage, Plainedge, and Plainview. One of the two houses he constructed in the area around 1738 still stands on Merritts Road in Farmingdale.

In the 1830s, in anticipation of the construction of the Long Island Rail Road, a land developer named Ambrose George bought a significant expanse of land situated between a community known as Bethpage (now Old Bethpage) and an area in Suffolk County called Hardscrabble.

He established a general store on the western part of this property, naming it Farmingdale. When the Long Island Rail Road commenced service to the area in October 1841, it designated its newest stop as Farmingdale, part of the line being built to Greenport. Stagecoaches transported people from the Farmingdale station to various destinations including Islip, Babylon, Patchogue, Oyster Bay South, and West Neck (in the Huntington area).

In 1886, a fire department was organized, and in 1904, Farmingdale officially became an incorporated village.

North of the community, in 1923, the Lenox Hills Country Club, an 18-hole private golf course designed by Devereux Emmet, was developed and owned by Benjamin F. Yoakum. This golf course was eventually acquired by the State of New York, significantly expanded, and reopened as Bethpage State Park in 1932. The golf course’s redesign was largely overseen by golf architect A.W. Tillinghast, who was later inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame.

The original Lenox Hills subdivision from the 1920s and subsequent adjacent subdivisions, located between the Bethpage State Park golf courses and the Long Island Railroad tracks, featuring rolling hills and a spacious boulevard, are known as the more upscale section of Farmingdale Village. Later on, Farmingdale became a hub for the aircraft industry, particularly with the presence of the Republic Aviation Company.

In 1899, a cyclist named Mile-a-Minute Murphy rode his bicycle along the Long Island Rail Road’s Central Branch through the Farmingdale area, achieving a speed of one mile per minute. For many years, the town celebrated its founding with the annual Hardscrabble Fair, featuring music, food, and games. Typically, this fair took place in May.
