About Massapequa, NY.
Massapequa, located on the South Shore of Long Island in Nassau County, New York, is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) within the Town of Oyster Bay. It serves as the central community in the Greater Massapequa region. According to the 2010 census, the CDP had a population of 21,685 residents.
The Greater Massapequa area encompasses not only Massapequa itself but also the neighboring CDPs of North Massapequa and East Massapequa, along with the incorporated village of Massapequa Park. This broader region is home to a combined population of over 75,000 people.
In the 19th century, an author referred to Massapequa as one of the “13 tribes of Long Island.” However, further research has revealed that they were actually a group of Lenape, who were Algonquian-speaking individuals occupying the western part of the island when Europeans first arrived.
These groups were distinguished by the names of the specific geographic areas they inhabited.
The Native Americans residing to the east of Massapequa spoke a different Algonquian language and had connections to the Pequot people of Connecticut and southern New England, both part of the larger Algonquian language family of tribes living in coastal regions along the Atlantic Ocean.
Notable Pequot bands in eastern Long Island included the Montaukett and Shinnecock. Presently, the Shinnecock Indian Nation has received federal recognition and maintains a reservation on the South Fork of Long Island.
According to the 2015 census, the population of the CDP (Census-Designated Place) was 22,652, residing in 7,417 households, with 6,297 families.
The population density was 6,207.5 individuals per square mile (2,396.7/km2). Housing units numbered 7,514, with an average density of 2,059.1 per square mile (795.0/km2). The racial composition of the CDP was primarily 97.42% White, with smaller percentages representing African American (0.17%), Native American (0.02%), Asian (1.27%), Pacific Islander (0.03%), and other races (0.37%), with 2.59% identifying as Hispanic or Latino of any race. Due to the substantial Italian and Jewish communities, the area is sometimes humorously referred to as “matzah pizza.”
Among the 7,417 households, approximately 38.3% had children under 18 living with them, while 73.4% were married couples residing together. About 8.5% of households were headed by a female householder with no husband present, and 15.1% were categorized as non-family households. Of all households, 12.5% consisted of individuals, and 6.9% had a resident aged 65 or older. On average, households contained 3.05 individuals, and families averaged 3.33 members.
In terms of age distribution, the population in the CDP was spread out, with 25.6% under the age of 18, 5.9% between 18 and 24, 29.5% between 25 and 44, 24.7% between 45 and 64, and 14.3% who were 65 years of age or older. As of 2007, the median age was 41 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.9 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over, there were 110.0 males.
Regarding income, the median household income in the CDP was $107,181, and the median family income was $116,266. Males had a median income of $78,859, while females had a median income of $57,016. The per capita income for the CDP was $42,169. A small portion of the population, 2.9%, and 1.6% of families, fell below the poverty line.
