About Plainview, NY

Plainview is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) situated close to the North Shore of Long Island within the town of Oyster Bay, Nassau County, New York, USA. As of the 2020 census, the CDP had a population of 27,100 residents. The Plainview area is served by the 11803 ZIP code, which corresponds to the Plainview post office.

Plainview, in conjunction with its neighboring hamlet, Old Bethpage, shares essential services such as the school system, library, fire department, and water district. Law enforcement services for both communities are provided by the Nassau County Police Department’s Second Precinct.

Plainview has its roots dating back to 1648 when Robert Williams, an immigrant from Wales, acquired land in the region. This land was particularly suitable for agriculture due to the presence of a small pond referred to as “Moscopas” by the local Native Americans, which translates to “hole of dirt and water.”

The rest of the land in the vicinity was acquired by Thomas Powell in 1695 as part of the Bethpage Purchase. The name “Mannatto Hill” was already recorded in the 1695 deed for the Bethpage Purchase, and the settlement eventually became known as “Manetto Hill.” “Manitou” was a Native American term that could signify either “god” or “spirit.”

The arrival of the Long Island Rail Road in nearby Hicksville in 1837 brought about a significant agricultural boom to the local area.

In 1885, residents of Manetto Hill sought to establish a local post office but were denied due to a similar name already being in use in another location upstate. Consequently, the hamlet was renamed “Plainview” because of the scenic view it offered of the Hempstead Plains from atop the Manetto Hills.

For many years, Plainview remained an agricultural community known for its cucumber farming, which supplied cucumbers to the large Heinz pickle factories situated in nearby Farmingdale and Hicksville.

However, in the early 1900s, a cucumber blight devastated the crop, prompting many farmers to transition to potato farming. Following World War II, a combination of potato blight and the desire of numerous returning veterans to leave New York City in favor of the more rural atmosphere of Long Island led to a significant sell-off of farmland. This sparked massive development in the area, contributing to what is often referred to as suburban sprawl.

Between 1950 and 1960, Plainview’s population surged from 1,155 to over 35,000. Most available land was developed during this era or designated as parkland. Although overall development has slowed, sporadic development continues as the remaining smaller parcels of land are also developed.

In recent years, a few large remaining tracts have given way to gated communities, offering a contrast to the majority of housing in the area. Notable developments include “The Hamlet on Olde Oyster Bay” and “The Seasons at Plainview,” a residential community catering to residents over the age of 55 and first-time homebuyers.

Demographics

In the 2010 census, Plainview had a population of 26,217 people living in 8,963 households, as well as 7,396 families residing in the CDP. Please note that the population likely changed by 2020. The population density was approximately 26,217 individuals per square mile (10,122/km2). There were 9,281 housing units in the area.

Regarding the racial composition, the CDP was primarily composed of 91.8% White residents, 7.5% Asian residents, and 0.07% from two or more racial backgrounds. Hispanic or Latino individuals of any race accounted for 0.03% of the population.

Within the 8,963 households, 36.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, and a significant portion, 73.0%, were married couples residing together. Additionally, 16.3% of all households were occupied by individuals living alone, with 11.9% of them being individuals aged 65 or older. On average, households had 2.87 occupants, while families typically had 3.24 members.

The age distribution in the CDP showed 25.1% of the population under the age of 18, 5.5% between 18 and 24, 26.0% aged 25 to 44, 26.5% aged 45 to 64, and 17.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.3 males, and among females age 18 and over, there were 89.4 males.

According to a 2007 estimate, the median income for households in the CDP was $126,045, and families had a median income of $151,780.

In terms of gender-based income, males had a median income of $89,032 compared to $61,480 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $76,634.
