General Guideline Principles for N-Acetylcysteine (NAC) for CRPS for workers compensation patients

The guidelines from the New York State workers compensation board aim to support doctors, podiatrists, and healthcare professionals in delivering the right treatment for N-Acetylcysteine (NAC) in cases of CRPS.

These guidelines from the Workers Compensation Board are designed to aid healthcare professionals in determining the suitable level of care for individuals with Complex Regional Pain.

It’s important to note that these guidelines are not a replacement for the expertise and judgment of healthcare providers. The final decision about care should be a collaborative one, made by the patient in consultation with their healthcare provider.

N-Acetylcysteine (NAC) for CRPS

N-Acetylcysteine (NAC) is recommended as an addition to an active therapy and exercise routine for managing CRPS.

In cases where CRPS is severe enough to require medication, and other treatments like NSAIDs, tricyclic antidepressants, bisphosphonates, and anti-convulsant agents have been attempted without success, NAC may be considered.

The suggested regimen involves taking three oral doses of 600 mg of N-acetylcysteine daily, based on a quality trial that spanned 17 weeks. It’s worth noting that some patients may not require extensive care, particularly if they are actively participating in a functional restoration program, which is the primary focus of the treatment plan.
