Custom Knee Replacement:

Who Could Benefit from Personalized Knee Replacement: Custom knee replacement, often referred to as individualized knee replacement, is typically recommended for individuals who experience severe knee pain, stiffness, and swelling that significantly restrict their daily activities and overall quality of life. Common underlying causes for this condition encompass osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, traumatic injuries, or other degenerative disorders affecting the knee joint.

The Surgical Procedure: Custom knee replacement entails a surgical intervention where the damaged knee joint is substituted with a meticulously crafted artificial implant tailored to the patient’s unique anatomical structure. The process commences with the utilization of advanced imaging technology to generate a three-dimensional model of the patient’s knee joint. This model serves as the blueprint for crafting a custom implant perfectly matching the patient’s knee.

During the surgery, the orthopedic surgeon delicately removes the damaged joint and replaces it with the custom implant. The entire procedure is conducted under anesthesia, ensuring the patient’s pain-free and comfortable experience throughout.

The Advantages: Custom knee replacement presents a multitude of advantages to patients, including:

  1. Pain Relief: Foremost among these benefits is the alleviation of chronic knee pain. The custom implant is meticulously designed to minimize discomfort, enabling patients to regain their mobility and return to their daily routines.
  2. Enhanced Mobility: Custom knee replacements improve a patient’s range of motion, allowing for more natural movement in the knee joint.
  3. Enhanced Quality of Life: Patients often report a significant improvement in their overall quality of life, as they regain the ability to engage in activities they previously had to forgo due to knee pain.
  4. Quicker Recovery: Custom knee replacements generally lead to swifter recovery times compared to traditional knee replacement surgery. The precision of the custom implant and minimally invasive surgical techniques can reduce post-operative pain and expedite the rehabilitation process.

Hip Replacement:

Who Could Benefit from Hip Replacement: Hip replacement is recommended for individuals grappling with severe hip pain, stiffness, and swelling that substantially impede their daily activities and quality of life. The most prevalent reasons for this condition include osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, avascular necrosis, or hip fractures.

The Surgical Procedure: Hip replacement involves a surgical procedure in which the damaged hip joint is replaced with a meticulously designed artificial implant that emulates the natural structure and function of the hip joint, facilitating patients in regaining mobility and alleviating discomfort.

During the surgery, the orthopedic surgeon adeptly removes the damaged joint and replaces it with the artificial implant. Similar to knee replacement, this procedure is performed under anesthesia to ensure the patient’s comfort.

The Benefits: Hip replacement offers several advantages to patients:

  1. Pain Alleviation: The primary benefit is the relief from severe hip pain, enabling patients to regain their mobility and resume their daily activities.
  2. Improved Mobility: Hip replacements enhance the range of motion in the hip joint, providing patients with more natural movement and flexibility.
  3. Enhanced Quality of Life: Patients often experience a significant improvement in their overall quality of life as they regain the ability to engage in activities that were previously challenging or impossible due to hip pain.
  4. Accelerated Recovery: Hip replacement surgery typically results in quicker recovery times, with patients experiencing reduced pain and improved range of motion compared to their condition before the surgery.

In both cases, Dr. Nakul Karkare employs innovative surgical techniques and state-of-the-art technology to ensure precise placement of implant components through smaller, tissue-sparing incisions. This approach helps minimize discomfort and expedite the recovery process. Dr. Karkare’s expertise in these procedures, combined with the individualized nature of custom implants, contributes to improved outcomes for patients seeking relief from knee and hip joint issues. If you are experiencing joint pain, stiffness, swelling, or have suffered an injury, please don’t hesitate to contact Dr. Nakul Karkare’s Orthopedic Center. Their team of specialists is dedicated to helping you regain mobility, alleviate pain, and enhance your overall quality of life. Your well-being is their top priority, and they are here to guide you on your journey to improved orthopedic health.

About Ridge, NY

Ridge is a community and designated census area (CDP) within Brookhaven, Suffolk County, New York, in the United States. According to the 2010 census, the population stood at 13,336 residents.

In 1693, William “Tangier” Smith, who possessed a homestead in Setauket, acquired a significant expanse of land on Long Island’s South Shore.

This acquisition was in recognition of his service as the mayor of Tangier in Africa. This land, known as Manor St. George, extended from the Carmans River (then known as the Connecticut River) in the west to the eastern fringes of Southampton. It had a northern boundary encompassing present-day New York State Route 25, totaling around 81,000 acres of land.

William Smith established his manor seat in present-day Mastic on the South Shore, while the northern section, which is now the southern part of Ridge, was referred to as “The Swamp” or “Longswamp.” Construction of a house in Longswamp did not occur until after the American Revolution.

In 1817, William Sydney Smith took up residence in the house and renamed the area Longwood.

By 1955, what remained of William Smith’s original manor was mainly situated in Ridge and was surrounded by the rapidly developing Brookhaven National Laboratory and its environs. Elbert Clayton Smith, who moved his family from California to live there, owned Longwood’s 750 acres.

He displayed great generosity toward his new community, making donations that included 51 acres for the construction of Longwood High School and 6 acres to the Middle Island Presbyterian Church.

In 1967, Elbert Smith passed away, and the Longwood Estate was divided into housing developments, almost facing complete destruction. Preservation efforts gained momentum, leading to the house and 35 acres of land being granted to the Town of Brookhaven in 1974. The Smith Estate was subsequently listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981.

In 1738, northern Ridge saw its first settlement by Samuel Randall, a widower from North Stonington, Connecticut. Samuel’s only son, Stephen Randall, and their descendants farmed a substantial 4,000-acre tract of land that Samuel had always referred to as “the Ridge” due to its geographical terrain.

Originally called “Randallville,” the community eventually adopted the name Ridge for postal purposes. The Randall burial ground near the William Floyd Parkway contains the grave of Lieutenant Stephen Randall (1736–1818), a patriot of the American Revolution and a veteran of the Suffolk County Militia who participated in the Battle of Long Island. The burial site also includes the graves of Randall’s wife, Elizabeth Swezey (1747–1834), and several of their descendants.
