Custom Knee Replacement Surgery:

For Enhanced Mobility and Comfort

Who Needs Custom Knee Replacement:

Custom knee replacement surgery is recommended for individuals who are experiencing severe knee pain and reduced mobility due to conditions like osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or injury-related joint damage. If your knee pain is significantly impacting your daily life and conservative treatments haven’t provided sufficient relief, this surgery may be the solution you need.

The Procedure:

Custom knee replacement, also known as personalized knee replacement, is a surgical procedure tailored to your unique anatomy. It begins with a thorough evaluation of your knee joint using advanced imaging technology. Based on this assessment, a custom implant is designed to fit your knee precisely. During surgery, the damaged knee joint is removed, and the customized implant is carefully positioned. The goal is to restore natural joint function while minimizing discomfort.

Benefits of Custom Knee Replacement:

  1. Precision Fit: The custom implant is designed to match your unique knee structure, improving the potential for a more natural and comfortable feel.
  2. Enhanced Mobility: With a precisely fitted implant, you can expect improved joint movement and less pain.
  3. Long-lasting Results: Custom knee replacement can provide long-term relief, allowing you to enjoy a more active and pain-free lifestyle.

Hip Replacement Surgery:

Rediscover Pain-Free Movement

Who Needs Hip Replacement:

Hip replacement surgery is typically recommended for individuals suffering from hip pain, stiffness, or a significant decrease in mobility due to conditions like osteoarthritis, hip fractures, or avascular necrosis. If your hip pain is interfering with your daily activities and impacting your quality of life, hip replacement may be the solution.

The Procedure:

Hip replacement surgery involves the removal of the damaged hip joint and its replacement with a prosthetic hip implant. The procedure is performed under anesthesia to ensure your comfort. The surgeon makes an incision and carefully removes the damaged joint. The prosthetic implant is then securely placed in position to mimic the function of your natural hip joint.

Benefits of Hip Replacement:

  1. Pain Relief: Hip replacement offers substantial relief from chronic hip pain, allowing you to regain an active lifestyle.
  2. Improved Mobility: The surgery can restore your ability to walk, move, and engage in activities without discomfort.
  3. Enhanced Quality of Life: With a successful hip replacement, you can enjoy a more fulfilling and pain-free life.

Both custom knee replacement and hip replacement surgeries are effective solutions to alleviate pain and enhance mobility.

If you are experiencing persistent knee or hip discomfort that limits your daily activities, consider consulting with Dr. Nakul Karkare, a highly experienced orthopedic surgeon, to explore which procedure is best suited to your needs. Dr. Karkare and his team will provide personalized care to help you regain your quality of life through these advanced surgical options.

About Port Jefferson

Port Jefferson, commonly referred to as Port Jeff, is a village that falls under the jurisdiction of the town of Brookhaven in Suffolk County, New York, located along the North Shore of Long Island. Officially recognized as the Incorporated Village of Port Jefferson, it had a population of 7,962 according to the 2020 United States census.

Originally settled in the 17th century, Port Jefferson retained its rural character until the mid-19th century when it emerged as a bustling center for shipbuilding activities. Over time, it has evolved into an economy heavily reliant on tourism.

The village’s harbor continues to play an essential role as the eastern terminus of the Bridgeport & Port Jefferson Ferry, one of two commercial ferry services connecting Long Island to Connecticut.

Additionally, it serves as the terminus for the Port Jefferson Branch of the Long Island Rail Road. Port Jefferson acts as a central point for the Greater Port Jefferson region, which encompasses nearby areas like Port Jefferson Station, Belle Terre, Mount Sinai, Miller Place, Poquott, and the Setaukets, serving as the cultural, commercial, and transportation hub for these communities.

The original settlers of what is now the Town of Brookhaven, situated in the neighboring hamlet of Setauket, acquired a tract of land from the Setalcott Indians in 1655. This land deed encompassed the area that presently makes up Port Jefferson, as well as all the other lands along the North Shore stretching from the Nissequogue River eastward to Mount Misery Point.

Initially known as Sowasset, a Native American term believed to signify either the “place of small pines” or “where water opens,” Port Jefferson underwent several name changes.

The first known dwelling within the village’s current boundaries was constructed in the early 1660s by Captain John Scott, a prominent figure in Long Island’s early history. This house, named Egerton, was situated on the western edge of Mount Sinai Harbor at Mount Misery Neck.

The hamlet’s initial downtown settler was John Roe, an Irish Protestant shoemaker from Queens, who erected his still-standing home in 1682. It remained a small community of five residences throughout the 18th century and was renamed “Drowned Meadow” in 1682.

Local legends suggest that infamous pirate Captain Kidd might have used the harbor as a rendezvous point on his way to bury treasure at Gardiners Island.

Another story claims that during the Revolutionary War, naval commander John Paul Jones outfitted a ship here. However, there is no concrete evidence supporting these claims, and historical accounts do not present them as established facts. John Paul Jones’s documented career does not include any visits to the village, which was under British control during his service.

Port Jefferson’s transition from a “swampish hamlet” to a bustling port town began in 1836 when local leaders initiated significant changes. They raised the elevation of the harborfront’s 22 acres, which were prone to flooding at high tide, by constructing a causeway. The village’s name was changed from “Drowned Meadow” to “Port Jefferson” in honor of Thomas Jefferson.

Numerous shipyards flourished along Port Jefferson’s harbor, making it the largest shipbuilding industry in Suffolk County during the 19th century. Port Jefferson primarily played a role in constructing and supporting vessels engaged in coastal freighting. Many of the village’s existing homes from this era belonged to shipbuilders and captains.

In the mid-19th century, a section of the village known as Hotel Square, situated at the intersection of two streets, became a thriving center for Port Jefferson’s early tourism industry. It featured various hotels and restaurants, including the John Roe house, which was converted into the Townsend House hotel. In 1855, the village’s first post office was added to this intersection.

The decline of Port Jefferson’s shipbuilding industry in 1923, marked by the sale of the Bayles Shipyard to the Standard Oil Company and the demolition of most of its structures, led to an economic downturn.

The village’s tourism industry also declined, resulting in the closure of many grand hotels in Hotel Square. Port Jefferson Harbor then became a depot for the oil transportation and gravel industries. During the Prohibition era, it was also a hub for rum-running activities. Decades later, Port Jefferson’s economy rebounded, with tourism becoming its cornerstone.

Port Jefferson was officially incorporated as a village in 1963. Its revitalization efforts in the lower part of the village soon followed, bolstered by increased tourism revenues. This transformation included the redevelopment of the former Mather & Jones Shipyard into Chandler Square, a promenade lined with shops. This revitalization provided public access to the waterfront, as industrial lots once obstructed it.

A prominent waterfront project during this period was Danfords Hotel and Marina, which integrated various historical and new structures into a luxury hotel complex, featuring a commercial marina and a walkable pier.

In 2004, Harborfront Park, developed on the site of a former shipyard and Mobil Oil terminal, transformed it into a public park with picnic areas, a seasonal ice skating rink, and a promenade. Concurrently, a former shipyard warehouse was rebuilt into the Port Jefferson Village Center, providing a new public space for events and recreation.

Several historic buildings were included in the Port Jefferson Village Historic District, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005. Additionally, the Bayles Shipyard and First National Bank of Port Jefferson building were separately listed.
