About Sound Beach, NY

Ninety years ago, back in 1929, The Daily Mirror, a New York City newspaper, offered a unique opportunity to its subscribers: the chance to purchase a 20- by 100-foot piece of undeveloped land nestled between Rocky Point and Miller Place. At the time, this sought-after plot came at a cost of $89.50 in 1929, which, when adjusted for inflation, equates to roughly $1,315 in 2019.

In the midst of the picturesque landscapes of Long Island’s North Shore, a quaint hamlet gradually took shape.

Sound Beach, covering a mere 1.6 square miles and inhabited by around  9,807 residents according to the last census, is nestled between Rocky Point and Miller Place. Positioned along the well-traveled Route 25A, it’s one of the North Shore’s tiniest hamlets, often easily mistaken for its neighboring counterparts.

Notably, Rocky Point boasts a historical society, as does Miller Place, which also includes the adjacent Mount Sinai. However, some prominent members of the Sound Beach community believe that a gap exists that needs to be addressed.

Mimi Hodges, a long-time resident, is one of several women spearheading an effort to explore Sound Beach’s past. She notes that the newspaper ad from 1929 didn’t attract the usual vacationers seeking respite from New York City. Instead, it drew working-class individuals seeking a change of pace during the Great Depression of the 1930s.

They arrived with meager possessions, often no more than tents for their families, yet managed to construct a small but thriving community.

The Sound Beach history project, led by the Sound Beach Civic Association, aims to bridge this historical gap. Driven by community leaders and long-time residents, local women are already unearthing old photographs that depict a vastly different Sound Beach, replete with dirt roads and weathered buildings.

For several decades, mail services were conducted through Scotty’s General Store on Echo Avenue or Moeller’s General Store on Sound Beach Boulevard. It wasn’t until June 1, 1946, that the hamlet’s first post office opened its doors.

At the small shopping center on New York Avenue, where La Famiglia Pizzeria currently resides, locals once frequented M.B. Sweet Shop for lunch and candy. Adjacent to it, where the Italian restaurant now stands, was the Square Market Store.

The building that now houses Bedrossian Real Estate on Northport Road was once a community hub, hosting events ranging from dances to pingpong and knock hockey. In the absence of a church, local community members would transform the space for Sunday Mass, complete with an ironed tablecloth as the makeshift altar.

Sound Beach even had its own police department, highway, and sanitation department. People would gather at the bluff’s “pavilion,” where kids could indulge in ice cream and hot dogs.

Stephanie Mcllvaine, a local resident, has been poring over newsletters from the 1940s, unveiling just how much has evolved in the past 80 years. A May 1940 newsletter revealed census results. It indicated that Sound Beach was home to 61 families, totaling 185 individuals, who lived there year-round.

The hamlet boasted four general stores, three gas stations, one restaurant, five general contractors, two masons, one electrician, two fire wardens, and two deputy sheriffs. Many year-round residents also served as members of the fire department.

Despite their deep dive into local history, there remain many unanswered questions. What locals refer to as “The Square” was either known as Journal Square or Moeller Square, though the origin of Journal Square remains a mystery.

While there was indeed a Moeller connected to the well-known general store, contact with the family has proven elusive. It’s been learned that James Moeller, who taught math at the Miller Place School District, passed away in 2012.

For many of the local women reminiscing about Sound Beach’s history, there is a deep fondness for the way things used to be. They’ve witnessed the area’s gradual transformation, from a retreat for working-class families to the vibrant community it is today.

In those earlier days, Sound Beach was the destination itself, eliminating the need to venture out to explore other parts of the island.

 

Demographics

In the 2015 census, the Census Designated Place (CDP) had a population of 9,807 residents, residing in 3,358 households, with 2,612 families. The population density was approximately 3,691.1 people per square mile (1,425.1/km2), and there were 3,640 housing units at an average density of about 1,370.0 per square mile (529.0/km2).

The racial composition of the CDP was as follows: 96.22% White, 0.63% African American, 0.14% Native American, 1.19% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 0.69% from other races, and 1.05% from two or more races. Additionally, 3.48% of the population identified as Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Among the 3,358 households, approximately 42.0% had children under 18 living with them, 62.0% were married couples living together, 11.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 22.2% were non-family households. Furthermore, 16.7% of all households consisted of individuals, and 5.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. On average, each household had 2.91 occupants, while the average family size was 3.29.

In terms of age distribution, the CDP’s population was spread out as follows: 28.7% were under the age of 18, 7.7% were aged 18 to 24, 33.7% were aged 25 to 44, 21.7% were aged 45 to 64, and 8.2% were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years, with a slightly higher number of males than females, with 97.8 males for every 100 females. Among females aged 18 and over, there were 93.7 males.

The median income for households in the CDP was $60,851, and the median income for families was $66,018. Males had a median income of $47,079, while females had a median income of $28,142. The per capita income for the CDP was approximately $22,550. About 5.0% of families and 6.9% of the population were living below the poverty line, including 9.5% of those under the age of 18 and 2.9% of those aged 65 or over.
